LOS ANGELES – Donna Balancia, producer of entertainment publication CaliforniaRocker.com and president of Entertainment Magazines Inc., led her team to win five journalism awards in one year.
CaliforniaRocker.com won two first-place awards and a third-place award for photography categories in the National Arts and Entertainment Journalism Awards. The accolades were followed by two third place awards in best social media and best website categories at the Southern California Journalism Awards this month.
In total, Balancia has led her reporter and photographer team to nine journalism awards in the last three years.
Balancia: ‘Great Honors’
“These are great honors and we are excited and happy to be rewarded for our hard work,” said Balancia. “With photographers Heather Harris, Suzanne Allison, Alyson Camus as well as writers like Craig Hammons, John Daly and Dan MacIntosh we have a great team.”
“It requires dedication to to journalism with great reporters to keep publications rolling today,” Balancia said. “We want to provide a service to musicians and we keep going.”
Great Articles and Content
Ivor Levene, Melanie Smith and others have also contributed to the success of the magazines. Levene and Smith worked on an exclusive interview and photo session with Keith Levene of The Clash.
CaliforniaRocker.com has interviewed many influential music-industry professionals in its four years of online publication. Johnny Winter, Bonnie Raitt, Mike Campbell and many others have taken the time to work with the magazine.
At a time when journalism is under attack and reporters, editors and “content creators” are being cut from jobs, Balancia and her team keep moving forward.
“It has been an incredibly challenging year not only for me, but for all creative types like musicians, artists and journalists,” Balancia said. “But we must focus on what we love to do and keep improving every day.”
Balancia said she has received a great deal of support from colleagues.
“I appreciate all the efforts of the great musicians, producers, publicists, agents and venues who have supported CaliforniaRocker,” Balancia said. “We look forward to many more years.”
